I’ve always been intrigued with strictly utilitarian spaces – especially those which are forgotten, neglected or awkward. Here are a few unsung spaces I’ve run across recently:

This narrow space between two additions along an alley has found utility as a dump.

This 19th-century wall facing an alley appears to have been built with salvaged limestone; some of it is finished more elegantly than would be typical of the back side of a building. The windows have all been forsaken and an odd combination of downspouts plays across the voids. The space between the building and the alley is now home to a commercial cooler, air conditioning units and a parking space.

A covered entry adds mid-century drama to a bank building.

I just love this wall.

This is still an operating lumber yard! Given the function, one would think they could make the needed repairs…
The rear of the limestone building is quite beautiful and fascinating.
