This radio station in northwestern Kansas is a delightful example of mid-century modernism – and helps to explain both its original appeal and current popularity. It’s quirky! It’s fun! Of course, this building might not have been so attractive had the radio station’s call letters been less uniform. Remarkably unchanged on the exterior, this building is still working as designed over half a century ago. The glass cupola was reportedly designed to assist with weather reports.
Wow, that is very cool! MCM never has been very high on my personal preferences, but I am growing to appreciate it more. I think it requires a bit more discernment, as there was a lot more poorly-executed designs in that era compared to 50 years earlier, but when compared to current standards, still much better (the amount of just plain bad architecture built today is just depressing).
There are a few similar structures here in Omaha. Here’s one that uses a bank’s name in large letters to support a curved canopy roof for their drive-up window. Sadly, it’s days are probably numbered for when the corner is redeveloped.
