Just a few random examples of some of the ways decorative concrete block has been used in the past for both ornament and privacy.  These examples all probably date to the 1960’s:

A well-preserved masonry office building with a hint of Brutalism.  The circle-motif blocks give privacy to office windows.

An outside sitting area is effectively screened from the street by decorative block near the entrance to a nursing home.

An exuberant awning enlivens an otherwise austere facade.  The angle of the sun reveals the building’s windows a few feet behind the concrete block.

Alternating sizes of concrete block offer a chilly reception to any potential visitors in stark contrast to the open and inviting porch that this Craftsman-style bungalow once possessed. The remodeled porch  is now old enough to be in vogue again.
